Visiting Us

Of course we will always welcome family and friends as visitors and we have plenty of room to accomodate you for any length of stay (although if you like it that much here you will have to buy your own house!).

As we are both now working on an 'as required' basis it will be difficult for us to offer anything other than bed and breakfast, although you are welcome to 'self cater' in the evening or we can always recommend somewhere to eat locally. We love to show our guests around the island but can only do so if we are not working. We can always suggest good day trips around the island and worthwhile attractions to visit for those who want to explore independently.

Our first full year here in 2005 brought us many visitors, we were busy throughout the summer months and even well into Autumn. We even had the pleasure of arranging a wedding here on Skye for good friends and then having them stay with us for their honeymoon.

However, 2006 has been very quiet and we have only had one visit, early in February. Our theory is that once people realise how long a trip it is to get to Skye any return visit is postponed for a while!

When we travel south we tend to fly and then hire a car, it actually works out cheaper for any visit of less than a week. Inverness has a brilliant Easyjet route to Bristol, it's cheap in the winter but not so in the summer. Otherwise they also fly to Glasgow from Bristol, which is cheap year round. Finally the route we use most, Prestwick to Bournemouth with Ryanair, is very cheap year round but it does involve a longer drive at this end, 5-6 hours. Car rental is available in all of the airport terminals.

If you are determined to drive here our own experience and that of others who have made the trip would suggest you allow anywhere between 11 - 13 hours from a start point south of Bristol. However, it is a beautiful drive once north of Glasgow and you will certainly enjoy it if you can keep your eyes open!

Visitors arriving by road will cross the Skye Bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh and will find that it's another 45 miles to our house at Kildonan which is just N.E. of Edinbane. To drive here just aim for Portree, and then on reaching the village follow the signs for Dunvegan. The turning to Kildonan is about 10 miles from Portree and is signposted just the once so don't miss it.

Kylerhea ferry                                            Mallaig to Armadale ferry

For those wishing to go 'Over the sea to Skye' there are a couple of ferries from the mainland, Calmac operate from Mallaig to Armadale in the south of the island, and there is also a privately run ferry crossing at the narrowest point between Glenelg and Kylerhea, also at the south of the island.

The roads are good, fast and generally safe. However, roaming deer and grazing sheep pose a real danger on all roads in the Highlands, especially in the winter.

There is much to see between the Skye Bridge and our house and many good photo opportunities, just watch out for those sheep and the occasional foreign tourist driving on the wrong side!
